Interviews and bibliography
I have split this sections into three sources; books, magazines and newspaper articles and websites.
The books list includes only those books which offer more than simply facts about Luise's life and career, for example, this excludes film encyclopaedia etc. Some of these texts may only contain a page, or even a short paragraph about Luise but are included as their content may be of interest to readers of this site. This bibliography also includes a list of published plays in which Luise has appeared and/or novels which provided source material for her films. I have included a brief description of the content relating to Luise and links to online retailers where readers can purchase copies of these titles. There is currently no biography, or autobiography, of Luise Rainer. Some years ago Luise began writing her own memoirs but, understandably in such a full life, gave up when she realised she had hundreds of pages and had still not reached 'Hollywood'! Her original manuscripts and notebooks along with hundreds of items of correspondence, diaries, legal paperwork, photographs, scrapbooks, personal effects and more are now housed at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center in Boston, USA. The collection includes thousands of items and includes items that cover the whole of Luise's life. There is much correspondence between Luise and both of her husbands, Clifford Odets and Robert Knittel, but the collection also includes letters to and from Anais Nin, Samuel Barber, Federico Fellini, Alfred Steiglitz, Pearl S. Buck, Jean Renoir, Lotte Lenya, Laurence Olivier, Henry Kissinger and many, many more
The magazine and newspaper articles page contains a list of interviews and articles about Luise which have appeared in print, from the 1920s to the present day, plus any magazine cover portraits, with some images of such covers. Where available I have transcribed interviews and they are available to view by clicking on the relevant title. If an article is available online at the source's website I have linked directly to their page.
The websites page lists only those interviews and articles which are exclusively available on the internet and are not sourced from previous printed material; this includes interviews with Luise, articles pertaining to her life and career and other related websites. I have decided to include a selection of blogs in this list as an example of Luise's enduring popularity amongst film fans. Links are given to all websites.
I am grateful for any omissions and corrections to these pages - please email me if you have further information.
